We began the year building our writing community. Students have a writing notebook in which they have created lists of people they can write about and have written several stories based on lessons from our Being a Writer program. The class listens to picture books to see models of good writing.
The opinion essay format was introduced during the first quarter. Students learned how to form their opinion about a topic from an article or story read. They wrote an opinion piece using our chapter book, Clementine. They needed to decide from the events in the story if the main character, Clementine was a good friend. Students also learned the parts of the narrative story. Each student wrote several narrative stories during the quarter. Narratives have a beginning, middle and end with events being describes with characters thought and feelings. Peer editing and teacher/student conferences are part of our writing process during our writing time in the classroom. |
Editing
Students use the writing process to proofread and edit their writing. Many lessons have completed about editing their writing. In picture on the left, students are editing a paragraph with the editing marks. The smaller pictures show pairs working together to share and edit their narrative stories.
